These are the Featherweight Screwdrivers that everyone has been talking about from our Singer Featherweight Maintenance Workshop Tour of 2016.
From Germany, this Wera Screwdriver is, by far, the best screwdriver we have found for use on the Singer Featherweight sewing machine — even better than any gun-smithing tool set! (We have tried many and most tips bend or break or strip the screw.) What makes these particular screwdrivers different from all others is the superior quality in the manufacturing, composition, and the proportionately long shaft. Moreover, the handles were designed with a mold that is perfectly suited to the hand, corresponding to the muscles in your fingers and hands, enabling you to achieve a better grip and apply more strength. When attempting to loosen a screw, the torque of turning any screwdriver (ratchet, bits, etc.) naturally goes to the point of least resistance. This is usually the very tip of the screwdriver (or bit) or head of the screw itself. However, with the Wera Screwdriver, the extra long shaft absorbs the torque, and the shaft keeps twisting like a giant spring until the screw breaks loose.
Because of this design, these screwdrivers are very effective in enabling most anyone to tackle machine maintenance. Don’t be surprised if you hear a little “snap” as your screwdriver makes that first turn of the hard-to-remove screw! They are especially useful for screws that have been stuck for years, varnished with old oil and grease.
Normally, when we have taught our Singer Featherweight Maintenance Classes, Christian and I have always gone from student to student, helping each person loosen the screws on their Featherweight machines. However, after we switched to the Wera Screwdrivers, this became a rarity because most participants were able to tackle those screws without any assistance – even those who have arthritis, weak wrists, etc. We hear lots of good “snaps” in our Workshops now!
The long-shafted screwdriver – perfect for the hook assembly shaft screws, spool pin cover plate screw, needle plate screws, and countless other very-difficult-to-remove screws. This long-shafted screwdriver has a magnetized tip.
The smaller screwdriver – perfect for the gib hook screw, all three of the bobbin case screws (including the very tiny latch screw), motor pulley screw, and most all other small screws on the Singer Featherweight. The top end of handle on the smaller screwdriver spins. This allows for easy one-hand operation when resting your palm on the spinner while unscrewing the screw. This small screwdriver has a magnetized tip.
The mid-length screwdriver – perfect for the tension unit screws (see photos) that are extremely hard to remove and often stripped.
The safety screwdriver – perfect for the motor mount screw (see photo). Specially wrapped in the manufacturing process with an electrically safe rubber coating. This also helps to protect the finish of the machine harp as it rests against when you reach back to adjust the height of the motor by loosening and tightening the motor mount screw. This screwdriver has a laser engraved tip for an easier grip of the head of the screw. It also works exceptionally for the bed extension and bobbin winder screws.
The small motor screwdriver – perfect for the small screws on the Featherweight motor. It makes removing the moto pulley screw much easier, and it works great for the motor brush sleeve set screw as well.
We have found that these screwdrivers are helpful for some attachments as well.
